Writing Interactive Notebooks

I promised I would post about our Writing Interactive Notebooks (The WINs) and here it is! I’m not sure I’m in love with this set up for 1st grade, but I’d only tweak a few things.

Here is our notebook. I use a folder with brads to hold the pages. I don’t love this because brads are a pain if you ever need to add to it. We use garage sale labels to make the tabs that you will see in the pictures below.

It has a pocket on the front with a green sticker for things that are being worked on…

… and a pocket in the back with a red sticker for things that are finished.

We have a table of contents with four sections; Tools For Writers, Words for Writers, Ideas for Writers and Reflection. Reflection is the section I haven’t been able to use much with 1st graders, so I will be creating my own table of contents this weekend to use for next year.

Tools for Writers is the blue tab. It contains pages for our students to paste in icons from different mini-lessons we do throughout the year.

Words for Writers contains an ABC chart, personal word wall and a few different word charts for them to use. I plan to add extra pages here for the Phonics Friends word banks and I will change up the personal word wall to add more room for new words. I will also add a page for WOW words.

Ideas for Writers is where I have blank pages for circle maps as they brainstorm ideas for their writing.

That’s the tour of our WIN! What ideas do you have for improvement, or what do you do that works well for you?
